Workers' skills shine through
TAFE NSW – North Coast Institute has worked with Port Macquarie Panthers on designing a training program for 23 employees who recently graduated with a Certificate III in Hospitality (Operations).

The Hospitality Existing Worker Traineeships are aimed at people who have worked in the hospitality industry for a number of years but who do not hold any formal qualifications. Various study methods are used in the traineeship including individual tuition, group workshops and module workbooks. The majority of the training and assessment is carried out in the trainee’s workplace.

The participants were the first group of existing worker trainees from Port Panthers to graduate via this mode, according to teacher Lyn Rouse.

‘The program involved the workplace assessment of the trainee’s skills, identification of skills and knowledge gaps and then training to bridge these gaps,’ Ms Rouse said. ‘Areas covered include Beverage Service, Gaming, Customer Service, Conflict Resolution, Workplace Hygiene and Restaurant Service.’

The traineeship allowed the participants to gain recognition for the knowledge and skills that they have obtained in the workplace and learn valuable new skills, too.

According to recent graduate Donna Geyer, the course was very thorough and covered a wide range of topics. ‘The teachers were very approachable and available for phone calls and questions at any time,’ she said.

‘We were able to work at our own pace combining past experience, classroom-style tuition and workplace assessments,’ said fellow graduate David Wilcox. ‘This meant that all facets of an employee’s skill and ability were able to shine through, which made training a really positive experience.’

The Existing Worker Traineeship allow employees to gain recognition of existing skills and experience and the achievement of a nationally recognised and industry-endorsed qualification.
