Primo Gears up for export push
TAFE NSW – Hunter Institute’s Faculty of
Tourism and Hospitality has signed a
Memorandum of Understanding with Primo
Australia Scone Abattoirs to train and assess
employees under the Existing Worker Traineeship
program. The Institute will provide an on-site
consultant and assessor who will be responsible
for the co-ordination and management of
staff training.
A $15 million expansion into the export market is
just one reason why Primo Australia Scone
Abattoirs has turned to Hunter Institute for its
training needs.
Hunter Institute Commercial Manager, Tourism and
Hospitality, Ms Sharne Dwyer, said Primo Australia
Scone Abattoirs expects its workforce to reach
more than 300 later this year in response to its
current surge into the export market.
‘Hunter Institute is pleased to sign a
Memorandum of Understanding with Primo
Australia Scone Abattoirs to assess and train
approximately 150 employees under the
traineeship program, and up to 50 new entrant
trainees,’ Ms Dwyer said.
‘Hunter Institute has worked closely with ABEN
(Australian Business Employment Network) New
Apprenticeships Centre to establish this
agreement, and will provide an on-site TAFE
consultant to manage staff training for Primo.
‘The primary objective of this service will be to
assist management to implement and maintain
systems that comply with the requirements of
an export licence.’
Under the agreement, individual employees
will be enrolled in various strands of the
Meat Processing Certificates III & IV for their
specific training needs. Hunter Institute
teacher, Gary McLean, will assess the
employees in the workplace, and conduct training
at the Primo abattoirs to cover any skills gaps that
are identified.
‘The training package allows for individual
flexibility in the choice of modules, so the course
structure will be designed to reflect the specific
skills of the individual and the identified needs of
Primo,’ Ms Dwyer said.
‘The TAFE assessor, in conjunction with the
employee and the supervisor, will select the
most appropriate modules to complement the
employee’s duties. Training will provide a
pathway that reflects a career in the industry by
providing for multiskilling of the workforce, and a
way of recognising and adding to the skills of the
existing workforce.’
