TAFE NSW provides creative solutions for customised training to its commercial clients, from small businesses to large corporations, across many different industry sectors throughout New South Wales. In this issue, we take a look at four contrasting examples that illustrate the diverse range of flexible TAFE PLUS training solutions that have helped individuals and organisations to improve their prospects and performance. TAFE NSW – Riverina Institute is delivering customised training to children’s services workers. Their TAFE PLUS programs cover a range of topics which include how to get children involved in music making and sessions focusing on values and ethics. The ‘hands on’ approach of this training is providing child care workers with ways to enhance their interactions with children under their care. Bonded asbestos products are quite common components of older electrical cupboards and switchboards, posing a health risk to electrical and construction workers. TAFE PLUS programs delivered to Blacktown Council staff by TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute are helping to minimise the risks involved to Council workers. TAFE NSW is working with NSW traffic authorities to help reduce vehicle pollution and to address skills shortages. From March through June this year, TAFE NSW – South Western Sydney Institute, Wetherill Park College is presenting a series of free courses on ‘How to Reduce Truck Emissions’. This training is being sponsored by the Roads and Traffic Authority NSW. In addition, the Institute will develop a range of training programs designed to address skills shortages in the transport industry for the NSW Road Transport Association. Everyone selling, supplying or serving alcohol in NSW needs a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate. TAFE NSW was able to provide TAFE PLUS RSA training around Australia for 475 organisations planning to exhibit at the biennial Wine Australia 2004 show. With this support, TAFE NSW demonstrated once again that its flexible, customised approach can ensure that the show does go on. We also profile TAFE NSW – Illawarra Institute is the largest provider of vocational education and training in Southern NSW. Through 14 campuses and access centres it services the industrial and domestic communities of the region. In our February issue we reported on the important work being done by TAFE NSW – Riverina Institute’s National Environment Centre (NEC). TAFE NSW – Northern Sydney Institute was, in fact, the first educational organisation in NSW (and the second in Australia) to obtain certification to AS/NZS ISO 14001:1996. In addition, all colleges in Northern Sydney Institute have Environmental Management Systems that meet the requirements of this certification, including the provision of education and training services. It is a substantial achievement that has become part of the way the institute conducts business at all its colleges. The NEC is set up specifically to deliver training in the areas of environmental management, where they have adopted an approach that includes best practice environmental management training and the development of knowledge, skills and attitudes that actively promote this. The uniqueness we referred to in the February issue reflects these circumstances. Janet Stewart |
