New owner-builder information course
Do-it-yourself renovators can now get training, an owner-builder permit – and get on with the job! Are you considering a building project or renovations costing over $12,000? If you are, did you know that from 1 July 2002, in order to get an owner-builder permit, you will need to undertake approved training?

Well TAFE PLUS has good news for you – we can help! TAFE PLUS is offering a Course in Owner-builder Information across the state. TAFE PLUS has established this course in rapid response to changes in the Home Building Act (1989).

The Home Building Act now requires anyone undertaking a building project or renovations costing more than $12,000 to undertake an approved educational course or training. Only then will an owner-builder permit be issued by the NSW Department of Fair Trading.

There are several important issues flowing from changes to the Act which affect owner-builders. For example, under the Act if an owner-builder undertakes any building or renovations costing over $12,000 they will need to take out home warranty insurance cover if they wish to sell their home within six years.

Furthermore, if a contractor undertakes building or renovation work valued at over $12,000 for an ownerbuilder who wants to sell their house within six years, that contractor will have to provide the owner-builder with home warranty insurance
cover.

The good news is that the TAFE PLUS Course in Owner-builder Information will cover all the key issues and advise you of your responsibilities in a clear, concise and helpful way.

The course covers:

  • requirements for submitting plans to a regulatory authority
  • the selection of suitable, licensed tradespersons
  • understanding the insurance and taxation requirements affecting the owner-builder
  • responsibilities under NSW WorkCover regulations relating to Occupational Health & Safety issues
  • scheduling and budgeting for residential projects and dispute resolution.

More good news – the course:

  • lasts just 8 hours – so you won’t have to down your tools for long
  • costs just $160
  • is approved by the NSW Department of Fair Trading, and
  • satisfies the requirements of the Home Building Act (1989).

TAFE PLUS is pleased to be able to support the do-it-yourself spirit of many Australians who want to do their own building or renovations, and become approved owner-builders to boot!

The TAFE PLUS Course in Owner-builder Information will be held at campuses across the state and by distance learning through OTEN. For further information about this course call the TAFE PLUS Enquiry Service on 1300 131 499.
